Global Reception of the Classic Zhuangzi: Han to Tang (march 8-9, 2019)

In the first installation of our workshops series on the global reception of the classic Zhuangzi 莊子, we explored the text’s earliest reception from the Han 漢 (206 BCE - 220 CE) to the Tang 唐 Dynasty (618-907). We translated and discussed passages from the following texts/writers arranged in chronological order: 1) Han Historiographical Texts 2) Ruan Ji’s 阮籍 (210-263 CE) Discourse on Comprehending Zhuangzi (Da Zhuang lun 達莊論); 3) Wang Bi’s 王弼 (226-249 CE) Commentary to the Book of Changes (Yijing 易經); 4) Ji Kang’s 嵇康 (223-262 CE) Poetry; 5) Guo Xiang’s 郭象 (252-312 CE) Commentary to the Zhuangzi; 6) Cheng Xuanying’s 成玄英 (fl. 631–655) Sub-Commentary to the Zhuangzi; 7) Sima Chengzhen’s 司馬承禎 (647-735) Discourse on Sitting and Forgetting (Zuowang lun 坐忘論).
Global Reception of the Classic Zhuangzi: Song to Ming (March 23-25, 2023)

In this second installation, we explore the Zhuangzi’s reception history during the Song 宋 (960-1279), Yuan 元 (1279-1368), and Ming 明 (1368-1644) dynasties. Among others, we will translate and discuss passages from the following texts arranged in chronological order: 1) Li Shibiao’s 李士表 (fl. 12th century) Ten Essays on Zhuangzi and Liezi (Zhuanglie shilun 莊列十論); 2) Lin Xiyi’s 林希逸 (1193-1271) Yanzhai’s Verbalization of the Zhuangzi’s Meaning (Zhuangzi yanzhai kouyi 莊子鬳齋口義); 3) Li Zhi’s 李贄 (1527-1602) Dissecting the Zhuangzi (Zhuangzi jie 莊子解); 4) Kunqu-Versions of Zhuangzi Tempts his Wife (Zhuangzi shi qi 莊子式妻) 5) Cheng Yining’s 程以寧 Commentary and Sub-commentary to the True Classic of Southern Splendor (Nanhua zhenjing zhushu 南華真經註疏); 6) Hanshan Deqing’s 憨山德清 (1546-1623) Hanshan’s Commentary to the Zhuangzi’s Inner Chapters (Zhuangzi neipian Hanshan zhu 莊子內篇憨山注); 7) Fang Yizhi’s 方以智 (1611-1674) Yaodi Fires the Zhuangzi (Yaodi pao Zhuang 藥地炮莊).
